Headscarves
Delicate and bold
As DUKA was receiving kangas from local women, we started to find that quite a few different textiles were included as well, primarily headscarves. While these scarves are worn by Giriama and Swahili Muslim women alike, their predominant use is as hijab for Muslim women. These beautiful, thinner fabrics are widely seen and purchased all over the Coast of Kenya where the largest Islamic population resides.
After sorting the textiles, DUKA wondered what to do with these thinner scarves, both delicate and bold. We noticed women were still happy to sell them to be repurposed, buying themselves new scarves, so after a few conversations and attempts at different products, DUKA discovered these pieces were perfect for the Khadija kimono.
